Lost in America: How you and your church can impact the world next door. Tom Clegg & Warren Bird
Introduction
“Trees move the wind.” So said the gods of science, technology and human ability.
Today the wind has shifted. Today people are more open than ever before to the idea that the most powerful forces of this world are invisible and spiritual. In days past, that God was unseen was often given as a reason not to believe in God. Today being unseen is all the more reason to trust. Maybe the wind moves the trees.1
We’re thrilled to live in an area of incredible openness to spiritual conversations among friends. People today are open to God – and to many different gods. If people could verbalize their experiences, they might describe the journey something like this: “I haven’t yet accepted the Jesus you tell me about; but if I do, it’s because I’ve seen him in you.” Wow! The Holy Spirit can help us cultivate those see-God-in-me relationships. “For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.” (Philippians 2:13).
We’re fans of the Christian who described his job here on earth as being prepared for heaven when God brings him home and taking with him as many people as possible. God can use you to do just that in your life as well.
Our goal in Lost in America is to help you visualize what God does through something so simple and basic as genuine, intentional, other-directed compassion, friendship and love. This is the heart of evangelism at its best. Our perspectives will challenge prevailing stereotypes, change misdirected efforts, and lead to more joyful results. Success will not be measured in the amount of shipping cartons (what we print) or in new information (what you learn), but in lives transformed through God’s handiwork.
